Sanatura 102 Liceo Costa Rica 63

We're now entering the second half of the Torneo de Apertura; teams we faced at home in the first swing will now be road games, while previous road opponents will now visit the friendly confines of our gym (pictured above). So it was our turn to visit Liceo de Costa Rica last night as we kicked off the second swing through the league.

We got a strong start out of the gate, breaking out to a 19-0 lead and never looked back. Everyone got in on the scoring; Carnegie, Millinier and Jaythiev all scored twenty points or more. We were able to break down there zone defense with good ball movement and quality shots. Our size and speed was just too much for a depleted Liceo team to handle at the outset of the match.

In our first game, Canadian Dwayne Grant sliced through our defense for 33 points. This time we did a much better job of containing him; he still scored twenty points but he had a much tougher time getting to the basket. Of course, you shut one guy down and another one pops up. Jason Fisher, who played college ball at Millikin University, made five three pointers to help close the big lead, but by then Liceo was facing a big deficit. We then subbed in Carlos to clamp down on him and generally annoy him, which he did quite well.

One of our gold as we progress is to see progress on both sides of the ball. Tonight we saw that improvement. Now we break for Holy Week and then return with a big game versus San Ramon.

Game Notes

  • Our second Sub 21 player, Kevin Davis, made his First Division debut playing about five minutes. He actually started the game because of a roster mix-up, but got subbed at the first deadfall (for the record his first official stat was a turnover). Getting that first game under your belt is so important. Kevin is a smart player with some skills (and a ton of rust). I'm sure he'll do better in the future.
  • Jeff Dixon missed the game with a finger injury sustained late in the Escazu game. He should be out a couple weeks, which will be a test for our post depth. Dixon is one of our key glue guys; he does a little bit of everything in all facets of the game.
  • Here's a copy of our box score. We don't always get a copy (for reasons I quite don't understand), so consider this a treat.
