Cartago 67 Sanatura 85

Friday night I saw a miracle. That night, we played a veteran laden team of Cartago. Their leading scorer is Alejandro Grijalba. In the past five years or so, Grijalba has been through two serious motorcycle accidents. The first time he was in intensive care for two weeks. His last accident was this past December The last one this past December where as he was leaving a gas station a speeding car plowed into him leading to some pretty serious injuries (Accident article). I don't think anyone expected him to be playing basketball again, let alone this season. And yet there he was on Friday, not only playing but carving up our defense for nifty moves and step back jumpers, scoring 29 points. Now I don't know Grijalba well...but I have to say I have the utmost respect for his passion and dedication.

Michael and Dave split up the scoring duties (Jackson for 15, Milliner for 14) leading a balanced attack. After breaking out to a big lead in the second quarter, we were able to give the entire team plenty of minutes and play around with match ups. It got a little sloppy in the second half...we still have too many unforced errors with the ball.

Game notes

  • Cartago post player Ivan Jaen is the veteran of veterans, playing First Division ball at age 45 (I'm guessing because he just gaines eligibility to play Maxibaloncesto). I always thought he was the Robert Parrish of our league. Efficient and crafty, he has so many tricks up his sleeve that he still can manufacture trips to the free throw line. Ivan has won more titles than I can count.
  • Due to scheduling quirks this will be our last home game for about two weeks. We have the big game against Barva this Tuesday and then play at Escazu and Liceo before taking a week off for Semana Santa.
