PZ 92 Sanatura 115

Perez Zeledon has been the talk of the league early on with their new acquisitions, Dominican point guard Cesar Chaves and American forward Durell Sykes. The Dominican guy is good at getting to the basket and kicking out to shooters (more often than not sharpshooter, Jackie Acuña). The American forward is a handful on the baseline; he has some good hops and size which makes him a factor on the offensive glass. So going into the game we were focused on this quality opponent.

We broke out a big lead early in the first quarter, establishing our running game with some good defense early on. The flurry caught PZ by surprise as we did a good job of finishing our fast break. Then we leaned on our bench to grow the lead to thirty points. We had great intensity from everyone on both ends of the court. It was a prefect first half of basketball.

Then came the second half. Jackie has led the league in scoring about four years ago, so you know he can score. Jackie didn't play much last year, but it looks like he spent some extra time in the gym. Tonight, he caught fire in the second half, hitting eight three pointers with our guys draped all over him by the end. At one point he was firing away four to five feet behind the three point line. Usually Jackie is deadly at his home gym and less so on the road, but tonight he put on a shooting clinic. We'll need to do a better job at their place

Game Notes

  • We got two technicals tonight. One from Michael for hanging on the rim after a spectacular alley-oop and another for arguing with the ref. Horrible, just horrible. In FIBA rules, you get two free throws and possession of the ball (and the foul counts as a personal foul in your tally). We'll talk about that in Monday's practice.
  • Michael tried a 360 dunk in the fourth quarter, but clanged it 'til mid court. Still, the fans on hand were excited by the attempt. Mike ended up with 36 points, so we could overlook the miss.
  • Carlos made an incredible over the head, no-look, two handed pass to Dave that led to a trip to the free throw line. It's one of the better passes I've seen in this league and just an amazing play from Carlos.
  • Neil was finally able to sit on the bench, but had to stay sitting on the bench. Our license issue is almost resolved. Almost.
