Barva 67 Sanatura Escazu 72

DSC08301
A week ago I was bitching about the refereeing in the San Ramon game. Today, I'm as quiet as a mouse. Did we get a favorable whistle on Tuesday night? Maybe....but I also think we got jobbed in the game at Barva. So I guess things even out in the long run, which doesn't make it right or fair.

Barva came into the game undefeated. They have more resources than any other team in the league: professional players, ample court time, weight gym, full coaching staff. They can easily outclass any organization. And then you factor in the tradition of winning titles, which they're anxious to recover. With all due respect to the other teams in our league, they have been the team to beat this year.

A nice crowd turned out for the Tuesday night game. We switched up the starting lineup, putting John Chapell and David Carnegie in the starting lineup, which gave us a nice boost in a tight first quarter. The game was close throughout without either team able to break out a lead. We tried to attack inside, while Barva relied on the Martinez brothers for timely baskets.

As the third quarter came, we clung to a three point lead. Every time we would score a basket to make it a two possession game, Barva would answer with a mini run. Our free throw shooting was horrible through the first three quarters; it's incredibly hard to win games with 50% shooting from the free throw line. Deep in the fourth quarter, Barva was able to flip the score 63-59 after a thunderous dunk from Maikal Stibbins. Dwayne Grant came down and answered with a big three point basket. After a big defensive stop, David Carnegie got loose inside to re-take the lead. After that our defense stiffened, resulting in some key stops and we were finally able to hit our free throws to seal the game.

Game Notes

  • Alonso Sanchez led our scoring with 16 points. David Carnegie and John Chappell added 13 and 12 points respectively. Through 9 games we have had six different leading scorers which reflects our balance on offense. Kay Martinez had 20 points for Barva.
  • David Carnegie led our rebounding with 11, while point guard Cristian Chavarria led Barva with 10. Intrestingly enough, our starting swingmen (Javier Bustamante and Reinner Little) had 7 and 6 boards respectively.
  • Clifford Smith got called for a technical foul. Unlike the last game were we got called for four technical fouls, we were able to keep our composure and avoid getting called for any. I thought the refs did a better job of handling player's emotions. Earlier in the season, Clifford would have likely been ejected.
  • Neither team used its sub-21 players. We're both in pretty good standing in regards to minutes so we could afford not to play them. By the way, I really hate the rule change that we have to use them in the playoffs. Again, another terrible rule in our league.
