Escazu 89 Perez Zeledon 71

Coming off a dissapointing loss last Saturday, we had to regroup for the long ride over the mountains to play against Perez Zeledon. PZ was the upstart of Apertura, taking Barva to the brink of elimination. However, in the midseason period they lost some key pieces in Hernol Gardener, Jake McKenzie, Carlos Melendez and Urwick Anderson. While they still have a very dangerous trio on the perimeter (Jackie Acuña, Semaj Inge, and Thomas Douglas), their team looked shorthanded for this game.

Our goal for the game was to get back to basics, pull out the win and get in all the sub 21 minutes we could; our league requires us to play players under 21 a certain amount of minutes over the season, which roughly works out to 12 minutes per game. As a coach, you have to figure out the situations that lend themselves to accumulating minutes, as well as having your young guys ready for the challenge.

The team started off with much better intensity in the first quarter, particularly on the defensive end. Three minutes into the game and we already had an eight point lead which just kept on growing. With about three minutes to go in the first quarter, we subbed in Ian Waugh as our first Sub 21 off the bench. Ian is a senior in high school who can't always come to practice, so this was his first game time opportunity in a while. After an early turnover, he settled in and was an effective part of the unit as the lead grew to double digits. Later on, we rotated Ian and Adrian Chavarria, always keeping one of the two in the lineup.

Eventually we built a twenty point lead that let us play around with some different lineups and plays. To PZ's credit, their guys kept playing hard despite the deficit. Semaj Inge and Douglas kept attacking the basket, but our superior depth wore the opposing team down as we coasted to a much needed win.

Game Notes

  • Dave Millinier was the surprising points leader with 16 points scored. Surprising because he played a little more than a quarter in this game. We had just four guys in double digits, but this is one of those rare games where everyone scored for our team.
  • Semaj Inge had 24 points while Jackie Acuña had a relatively quiet 22 points.
